CITY INFORMATION

Oakland, founded in 1852, is a major American city in the Bay Area's East Bay) of San Francisco Bay in Northern California. Oakland is home of the Port of Oakland, one of three major shipping ports on the American West coast. Economic recovery, along with Oakland's wealthier hillside neighborhoods, attempts to reduce crime, high rents and home prices in nearby San Francisco, and a substantial offering of shopping districts and restaurants representing cuisines both homegrown and worldwide have led to an increase of population and of real-estate prices in the past decade. In the past few years, new bars and nightclubs have opened in Downtown Oakland, some in the various downtown neighborhoods.
